With the weather once again playing havoc , forcing us to postpone our first hotspot by a week we are finally at the business part of the 2011 season. The warm-up race from Aliwal North went off well and will count towards the best bird for the year, which will be calculated on time flown over the five races.

Most of the spare birds have been activated, but there are still some unpaid entries in the loft which will be available to the public. They will be marked on the basketing list and results as we proceed.

The pigeons are in good condition and ready for the tough couple of weeks that lie ahead.

We would like to thank Medpet for once again sponsoring our medicine without which we would never be able to keep your pigeons healthy in the modern day sport, with new diseases floating around.

At  a recent committee meeting we decided to open the loft a month earlier on the 1st of August as the loft will be relocating to our farm at the end of the season and thus no need to wait till the completion of the final race. This will give the fanciers that already have a round of youngsters the opportunity to get their birds in early. I realize that we still have to get through this season, but I am already excited over next season and having the loft on the farm.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Hayley and Peter for allowing us to complete the season in the loft and thank them for the 8 years that the loft has been on their premises. There have been some great moments over the years and one will be hard pressed to find a better venue for a `one loft` setup in the country.

All the results will be sent out as soon as the races have been completed, but I will try and update the website – www.borderloft.co.za as the birds arrive at the loft (when possible) as I know how inquisitive I can get on race days when I have birds participating.

Good luck to all entries and someone is going to walk away a happy man in a couple of week’s time. As pigeon racing is very unpredictable you should not get discouraged if your pigeons are a bit late in the beginning and also not count your money too soon, as someone once told me that a week is a long time in the life of a racing pigeon and allot can change.

If you want to buy any of the spare birds please give Shereen (084 206 4115) or me a call.

It has been a while since the last letter and there is quite a lot to report on, unfortunately not all good.  Our condolences go out to the families of Boet Minnaar , Brian Bowles and also Buks Scharneck whom have passed on recently.  My father (Hennie Jacobs) is also in hospital with heart problems and we pray that he will make a full recovery.

The pigeons are really looking good and have had a lot of shorter tosses leading up to Queenstown (where we are now).  The weather has really been challenging over the last month, with firstly being flooded for a week and then blown away by the wind. This has put us about two weeks behind schedule and the program will be adjusted and sent out shortly.  As pigeon racing goes there has been a few casualties along the way, but I am confident that the pigeons that are left are ready for the tough road that lies ahead.

I have finally, with the help of Bertram Meyer, managed to sort out my one loft program that clocks directly to the computer. It was set up, but was only clocking about a third of the birds.  With this working properly I can now send out the results much quicker and don`t have to sit and do everything manually.

It was decided at a recent committee meeting that the loft will move to our farm at the end of the season where we will be able to accommodate up to 600 pigeons. This will make management much easier and I will be able to spend much more time with the pigeons which they deserve.

There is still a couple of entries that have not been paid and it will be appreciated if you could sort it out with Shereen (084 206 4115) as soon as possible as we are getting closer to the business section of the season.
